The Yoga of Meditation

This chapter provides detailed instructions on the practice of meditation (Dhyana Yoga). Krishna describes the ideal environment, posture, and mental focus required for meditation. He emphasizes the importance of controlling the mind and explains the fate of an unsuccessful yogi.

Chapter 6, Verse 5

उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् | आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः ||5||

Elevate yourself through the power of your mind, and not degrade yourself. The mind is the friend of the self, and the mind is the enemy of the self.

Transliteration

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet | ātmaiva hyātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ ||5||

Commentary

Krishna emphasizes the dual role of the mind. A disciplined and controlled mind acts as a friend, guiding the self towards spiritual progress and liberation. An uncontrolled and undisciplined mind, however, acts as an enemy, leading to bondage and suffering. This verse underscores the critical importance of mastering one's own mind.
