Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga

The Yoga of the Three Gunas

Krishna provides a detailed analysis of the three modes (gunas) of material nature: sattva (goodness), rajas (passion), and tamas (ignorance). He explains how these gunas bind the soul to the material world and influence a person's character, actions, and knowledge. He also describes how to transcend these modes.

Chapter 14, Verse 26

मां च योऽव्यभिचारेण भक्तियोगेन सेवते | स गुणान्समतीत्यैतान्ब्रह्मभूयाय कल्पते ||26||

One who engages in full devotional service, unfailing in all circumstances, at once transcends the modes of material nature and thus comes to the level of Brahman.

Transliteration

māṁ cha yo ’vyabhichāreṇa bhakti-yogena sevate | sa guṇān samatītyaitān brahma-bhūyāya kalpate ||26||

Commentary

Krishna provides the direct method for transcending the three modes of material nature. He states that unwavering and pure devotional service (Bhakti Yoga) automatically elevates a person beyond the influence of the gunas, allowing them to realize their true spiritual nature (Brahman).
